1. Nipple Shield

Hospital Bag

This is a nipple shaped shield that covers the breast while breast feeding. A mother’s nipple can crack during this period. This item allows mommy’s nipple to heal while she continues breastfeeding. If a mother has a flat or inverted nipple or she has a baby with a problem latching to the breast, this tool can also be an effective choice. One of the better breast shields is Medela Nipple Shield. It is important however to get the right size for you. For our pick of the top 10 best shields, click here.

2. Nursing tank tops/Camis

Hospital Bag

It is exactly what the name suggest, a tank top/ cami that makes your boob accessible; a baby’s dream. This can be worn alone, under shirts or with a nice coat, jacket or blazer over. When buying the tank top/cami make sure it works well with your nursing bras and that the straps are adjustable. They are actually some tank tops/camis  that have built in bras that provide support. Oh, make sure to get ones with pockets for your breast pads and ones that are washable. Here are a few brands that can be used:

This top is pricey but worth it. It has the internal shelf bra which is a plus and it clips down for full boob access. This tank top is on the short but stylish side and will look great with a jacket when heading out.

This one is comfortable and affordable. Both for the working and the stay at home moms.

This is another pricey top ($60). This one is leak proof and offers support for larger breast sizes.

3. Breast Pads

Your body will release milk without warning. To prevent the embarrassment of having wet circles in your clothing, breast pads are necessary. There are different types of breast pads. For instance:

  • Disposable breast pads

My personal choice.  Use once and dispose of. They come in different brands and have different shapes and sizes to choose from.

  • Reusable breast pads

As the name suggest, they are reusable and cost effective. Try to get the organic reusable washable breast pads.

  • Silicone Breast pads

Silicone breast pads have a sticky surface that adheres to the breast. These breast pads can be used with or without the bra.

4. Mommy Diapers/Postpartum Diapers/Pads

After giving birth you will have a lochia discharge (this is a vaginal discharge you have after giving birth. It contains a mix of blood, mucus and uterine tissue). Every mom’s experience with this is different. Of course they are different types of pads and you should buy them according to your specific needs. There are both disposable and reusable (an environmentally friendly choice) available.

5. Breast Pump

top 10

Breast pumps are devices that mothers use to extract milk from there breast. There are many different types of breast pumps:

If you are a working mom, this is an ideal choice because it saves time. It is easy to clean. And of course, there are many types to choose from.

First of all, they are cheaper than the electrical ones. They are placed over the nipple and then pumped to create the suckling effect that stimulates milk flow.

Right away, a pro to this breast pump is its light weight; Lighter than the electrical breast pump that is but they are not as powerful as the electrical breast pumps and do not come with as many options. One major advantage though, is that it is battery operated therefore when there is no electrical outlet, the breast pump can still be used.

6. Hospital Socks

top 10

When getting hospital socks for your stay, please get the ones with the grip/ the non-skid ones. Though some hospitals may provide these, it is always good to walk with them as a just in case. Feel free to check out Medline’s options.

7. Robes

top 10

Maternity robes/ Maternity gowns are a great idea and good for nursing. The hospital may provide this but not everyone would use them  and hey, this is your opportunity to buy the robe or gown of your choice. A beautiful gown that u would want to take beautiful pictures in with the little one.

8. Baby Clothes

Labor and Delivery, top 10

Pack at least three different outfits in different sizes if you can because you do not know what the size of you baby will be. Remember blankets, socks, booties and hats.

9. Toiletries Kit

top 10

Again, although the hospital may provide these, it is a good idea to walk with the basics such as your toothbrush, toothpaste, and hairbrush creams etc. This would make you feel much more comfortable.

10.Charger and charger cables

Do not forget your charger! You can walk with an extension cord or a long charger cord in case the electrical point is too far from your bed. You will need mobile devices to take pictures and to talk with love ones especially after delivery.
