Best Detangling Brush For Curly Hair; Hidden Truths & Proven Methods

Today’s topic was a bit of a turning point for me. A stop “keeping up with Jones” or in my case I stopped keeping up with hair YouTubers. Like I’ve said in previous blogs, I often followed YouTubers and what they bought, I bought which was dangerous. I remember there was particular brush that was praised in the natural hair YouTube community so of course I decided to buy it for myself. That brush literally ripped my hair out! All it did was define my curls. Shortly after, a new brush came out and everyone was talking about how that brush was pulling out their hair. It thought me to use and to appreciate what I have so that was exactly what I did, and it worked. It didn’t stop me however from watching YouTubers trying out new brushes. I still took note of the best hair detanglers and ones I wanted to try next all in the name of finding the best detangling brush for curly hair. So, today’s topic is about some of the best reviewed and traditional hair detangler tools for type one through type four hair types.

Finger Detangling

I heard that our ten fingers are our tools so it should be no surprise to you that finger detangling is first on the list. I know a lot of naturals swear by this method. Finger detangling Is something I do try my best to do but I’m still learning. I do lose patience at times and turn back to other tools, sadly. I believe if you choose this method, you have to be patient and believe that it can produce great benefits if done properly. It can be done on wet and dry hair. You pull your fingers through your hair, dealing with each knot individually, to help carefully remove each knot rather than the use of a hair tool that could cause breakages. This is naturally the best detangling brush for curly hair.

Pros

  • Finger detangling allows more control
  • This method does aid in Length retention since you take time in working through knots instead of going through them with a comb or brush that could cause breakage.
  • While your fingers work through your hair, you get a better knowledge of your hair.

Cons

  • Chipped nails can rip hair
  • It takes time especially if you are not regularly finger detangling

Wide-tooth Comb

I feel I was a bit ahead of my time with the wide teeth comb or at least it was in the country where I currently live. But before getting here, I remember my mom (type 3 hair) told me that she saw a wide teeth comb in a store in England and she thought that that comb had to be the solution for my hair (type 4 hair) and that was almost 30 years ago. Back then we called it the big comb and it was used by my mother when the regular combs could not detangle our thick type 4 hair. Back then, all of my friends didn’t seem to use a wide tooth comb.

A wide-toothed comb as the name suggests is a comb designed with further space between the teeth of the comb (prongs). Wide tooth combs are made for people with hair that tangles easily or is too thick for fine-toothed combs. But I’ve seen a person with straight thin hair use the wide-tooth comb in order not to lose too much hair but it’s not ideal for straight hair.

Pros

  • It’s cheap
  • Easy access to buy
  • It detangles your hair

Cons

  • They are better options
  • Tends to break easily

This brush is made with flexible, rake-like tines jutting up from the handle designed to bend with the hair as you brush it. It comes with a locking clip so you can adjust the brush how you would like it. It allows for anything from letting the tine move freely or locking them all together with its clip.
